Meet Fumble - the youth charity bringing sex ed to all!
To celebrate Small Charities Week 2024, SheSpot are supporting Fumble, an award-winning youth charity providing a happy, healthy world of free sex education. Their work is vital in the digital age when the challenges young people face around sex, relationships, identities and wellbeing are truly unprecedented.
We asked Fumble more about their mission, work and incredible impact on young people. Check out their answers below. Please do share, support and save the campaign!
Why do Fumble exist?
Fumble exists to ensure young people can lead safe, happy lives in the digital age, with its unprecedented challenges and online harms.
Even with the best sex ed in schools (which can vary wildly in its quality, content, and messaging!) young people are turning to the internet for answers to their questions about sex and relationships, their bodies, their sexual health, and their mental health. All too often this means they are encountering content that is inappropriate, unhealthy, or unsafe.
Children as young as seven are using pornography for sex education because they can't find appropriate alternative sources online (BBFC), and a quarter of primary school age children have seen porn (BBC). These trends have a direct impact on young people's attitudes and behaviour as they grow up. TES recently highlighted that sex crimes in schools were up by 255% in four years, and 9 in 10 UK girls said that sexist name calling and being sent unwanted explicit pictures or videos happened 'sometimes' or 'a lot' (OFSTED).
This needs to change.
Young people urgently need a safe, inclusive online space to learn about sex and relationships - that's Fumble.
What do Fumble do?
We're an inclusive, non-judgemental, trustworthy place for all young people to ask questions and find safe, quality answers. All our content is co-created with young people, and we always aim to meet the needs of those that have been traditionally left out of mainstream provision of sex ed, especially LGBTQ+ young people, those living with a disability, those who are racially marginalised, and those struggling with their mental health. We cover key topics everyone needs to know about - from consent & healthy relationships to pleasure & wellbeing.
'Fumble is like the knowledgeable best friend every young person needs when growing up. A handbook for everyone, to guide them in making the right sex and relationship choices for themselves.' - Amy, 19.
We want to normalise conversations about sex and relationships, and so we’ve also launched our new digital workshops for adults who have young people in their lives they want to support. The workshops are designed to help you build your knowledge and confidence to have open, supportive conversations about sex ed.
If you want to support Fumble’s mission, you can sign up to give a one-off or recurring donation via our website here. All donations make a huge impact for us, and will go straight into our work providing happy, healthy resources so everyone can be empowered to make informed choices about sex and relationships.
If you sign up to donate £10 or more a month, you'll become a Friend of Fumble. This means you'll get unlimited free access to all our digital workshops, and we'll send you out a free Fumble tote bag as a thank you!
